Ecotourism Adventure: Problem or Solution?

by Peter Wilson

For some, there is one question that is uncomfortable when asked. For a few, this question is even disturbing because it threatens the positive impact that ecotourism can have on the tourism industry and on the world environment. But some have asked the question nonetheless: Is ecotourism becoming a problem, or is it almost entirely beneficial?

There is a large segment of the population that knows little or nothing about the concept of ecotourism. The members of this segment of society generally participate in more traditional mass/recreation tourism, basing their travels in a city and giving no thought to the natural resources that are being exploited. There is, however, a portion of the world population that is quite aware of the ecotourism concept and they want to understand the idea more fully so they can decide for themselves if this segment of the tourism industry is a good thing or a bad thing.

It might be wise to begin with a fundamental understanding of ecotourism. Only then can the thought process move on to whether it is a good influence or a negative influence on the resources and cultures of the planet.

Those who take part in ecotourism travel to a selected destination so that they can experience the culture, wildlife and scenery the site has to offer. Most ecotourism participants are committed, socially conscious individuals who want an adventure that involves preserving resources and even restoring some of the areas to their natural state. Ecotourism gives travelers the opportunity to grow personally, through an experience that cannot be duplicated.

Ecotourism has its roots in the idea of individual travelers being socially, culturally and environmentally informed so that they can avoid having a negative impact on their surroundings. In addition, these travelers try to enhance the integrity of destinations and encourage the traditional cultures of local populations.

With this type of individual involved, can ecotourism really be a problem for the globe and its inhabitants? Some would say that this is not the case, because the vision of ecotourism is to help eliminate pollution and to celebrate diversity in nature and culture. Such actions can only be good for tourism as a whole, some would argue. If tourists walk, with backpacks, instead of driving, ecotourists would ask, isn’t that a positive impact?

There are some, however, who find that ecotourism is becoming a problem for others who enjoy nature. For example, some lifelong scuba divers are encountering a growing number of beginning divers who take to the sea because they feel they should enjoy and celebrate the magnificent aquatic life in our oceans. These experienced divers sometimes draw criticism from ecotourism proponents who believe that human beings should not scuba dive because it disturbs the natural flow and rhythm of the ocean dwellers.

Most clear-thinking individuals will come to their own conclusions, based on experiences within the ecotourism or mass tourism fields. For most, however, ecotourism is not a problem, because these individuals believe the activity is beneficial. There may be no clear-cut answer in this ongoing debate.

East Africa, including Kenya, does not yet have a high profile as a holiday destination in America, but is growing in reputation as a unique vacation experience. Europeans, and the British in particular, have less distance to travel to Africa, and have been been the mainstay of Kenyan tourism, attracted by the unique mix of the tropical beach and African safari vacation. Luxury vacations have become more affordable as European currencies have strengthened, prompting investment in Kenyan tourist facilities.

Kenya’s tropical weather is ideal for holiday makers all year. The rainy season is between May and July, but mostly the rains come in short tropical downfalls that are unlikely to disrupt a Kenyan vacation even at this time of year.

There is an abundance of interesting activities to experience in Kenya. Kenya is unique in being able to offer the combination of relaxing on a tropical beach resort vacation with an African wildlife safari adventure.

Most of the Kenyan beach resorts and hotels are located about an hour’s drive from Mombasa Airport. They offer sandy beaches and swimming in the warm Indian Ocean. There is a choice of accommodation for all pockets, from budget hotels to top level luxury five star resorts.

Safari expeditions can be chosen from short or long trips, and from simple to luxury facilities. The Tsavo National Parks are not far from the beach resorts, and you might choose just to spend a couple of days viewing the wildlife, or take longer if you prefer.

Traveling further to Nairobi, you can experience your safari in the Masai Mara Game Reserve. Luxury facilities and safari themed accommodation in a 4-5 night expedition will more than complement a luxury beach resort vacation on the coast. You can choose other options as you wish.

You are likely to see a broader variety of wildlife in the Masai Mara compared to the Tsave National Parks, but either experience offers a thrilling few days viewing the abundant African wild animals in their natural habitat, guided by expert safari guides to make sure you will be able to see the wildlife from close at hand in safety. Whatever safari excursion you choose is sure to be eventful and memorable.

The Wonder of Scotland

by Frank Goddard

The United Kingdom of Great Britain is an extremely popular vacation destination. The kingdoms are England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland with each having unique differences in architecture, culture, language, accents and much much more. The citizens of each country are both proud of their own country but also very proud to be British so a person from Scotland can declare himself both Scottish and British with the vast majority placing “Scottish” first and foremost. Scotland was a fiercely independent nation until the Act of Union in 1707 brought it into union with England. Even today there is a strong movement for independence. Even though Scotland has a devolved government with some important and influential powers, the nationalists feel that the Scottish peoples will be better served by a free and independent government with total power over the country’s destiny.

Think of Scotland and the vast majority of folk will bring to mind images of bagpipes, tartan, kilts and the likes, younger folk may think of the “Tartan Army” and the massive support for the national football club of Scotland, but all will have rather similar thoughts of what is truly Scottish. Sadly much of the quaint biscuit tin lid pictures of Scotland are little more than a very clever marketing campaign which started a long time ago when the likes of Sir Walter Scott (a famous poet and novelist) worked hard to promote Scotland as a vacation destination to the British Royal Family and the English upper classes. To discover the true Scottish culture we need to take a closer look at the country’s history but, more importantly, we can take a look at the different regions and the most important cities which often have distinctive differences.

While Sir Walter Scott took much from the Highland way of life and repackaged it, in what he considered a more suitable form for the English aristocracy, the basic elements are distinctively Highland. The tartan kilt is the traditional dress of the region and is still seen throughout the area today, though more often at weddings and in traditional pipe bands. Besides the tartan cloth, kilts and bagpipes, there is much to interest the tourist in the Highlands not least the most incredible countryside which consists of the most spectacular mountains and misty glens. Towns such as Fort William and the city of Inverness are few and far between with little more than rough open countryside, dotted with numerous tiny villages, between them. Even more remote are the islands of the Hebrides, while the Isle of Skye (Inner Hebrides) may be the most popular the islands of the Outer Hebrides are increasingly popular with tourists keen to enjoy the distinctive Gaelic culture.

The capital city of Scotland is Edinburgh and it’s roots can go back thousands of years. Surprisingly there are still some fine examples of old buildings to be found in this thoroughly modern city of culture. Of course the city is dominated by Edinburgh Castle but there is much, much more to entice the tourist not least the incredible number of festivals spread throughout the year from the Edinburgh Festival in the summer to the New Year’s Hogmanay celebrations in the winter.

Strangely Edinburgh is not the largest city in Scotland, that honor goes to the nearby city of Glasgow. Glasgow could not be more different to Edinburgh if it really tried and there is strong competition between the two cities. While Edinburgh is quiet and laid back Glasgow is fast and furious at times, especially in the evenings when the town’s nightlife explodes into life with a multitude of restaurants, bars and nightclubs. Of course during the day there are plenty of architectural delights, numerous museums and galleries and absolutely amazing shopping to keep you fully entertained.

Besides the two cities of Edinburgh and Glasgow there are plenty of other towns and cities, such as Sterling, Perth, Dundee and Aberdeen, that are worth visiting as each are very different from one another. Each has it’s own tourist attractions such as St Andrews and it’s famous golf courses. One of the most popular tourist attractions is actually a modern work of engineering, the Falkirk Wheel but, in the main, most tourist attractions in Scotland are historical buildings or sites such as Stirling Castle.

Whatever your interests Scotland can provide the location for your perfect vacation. When you have chosen where to base yourselves you can investigate all of the tourist attractions but it is also well worth finding out what tours are available. One of the most popular types of tours in Scotland is the whisky tour but others are just as popular, such as Edinburgh’s many ghost tours. So, when you are next choosing a vacation destination give Scotland some thought.

Strange Places To Visit in London

by Phil Hamilton

The area of Greater London in England is the biggest metropolis in the whole of Europe covering an enormous area of over six hundred square miles. Throughout the city are numerous world class tourist attractions such as the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben, the London Eye and, of course, Buckingham Palace and other places associated with the British Royal Family. However, dig a little deeper and you will find a number of not so well known places well worth visiting.

One of the most incredible places in London to visit that is not too widely known is the eerie Highgate Cemetery. The cemetery would fit the bill perfectly as a location for the shooting of a Hollywood gothic horror story with it’s Victorian splendor now aged beautifully and rather overgrown. Covering an area of around 37 acres Highgate Cemetery has a number of noteworthy graves with amazing obelisks, vaults, mausoleums and catacombs. Amongst the most famous grave monuments is that of Karl Marx.

Karl Marx, the “Father of Communism”, had moved to London in 1849 and lived there until he died in 1883. Originally he had been buried in a rather ordinary family grave but the Communist Party of Great Britain felt something more monumental was required for such an incredibly influential person and they commissioned the creation of a fine bust of Marx which was put in place in 1954. Unfortunately the change was not met with universal delight as expected as many felt that it went against his teaching and, in 1970, there was an actual attempt to destroy it by blowing it up.

Of course you will also find many other graves belonging to famous people of the past including that of a once famous bare knuckle fighter called Tom Sayers. Charles Dickens’ family grave can also be found at Highgate and other famous graves include those of; George Eliot, J. W. Cross, C. H. Newton, Michael Faraday, Julius Beer, Christina Rossetti, G. Wombwell, Dr S.Birch, James Selby, John Lobb and six former Lord Mayors of London.

Due to the rapid increases in the population of London during the Victorian period the disposal of the dead became something of a problem. In response seven cemeteries were created which are known as the “Magnificent Seven” due to their typical Victorian design and over indulgence which can be seen in the many public buildings which remain today. Of the seven graveyards the one at Highgate is the most decorated and it is considered the finest.

To meet the demands of the successful Victorians Highgate had their mausoleums built together in a most amazing fashion. The entrance to the Egyptian Avenue is one of the most spectacular. The avenue itself has mausoleums on either side and it leads on to the famous group of mausoleums known as the “Circle of Lebanon” which is one of the most photographed parts of the cemetery.

One of the most exciting aspects of exploring Highgate is suddenly seeing an incredible statue appear amongst the overgrown bushes and vines. Throughout the cemetery there are many examples of the most incredible memorial sculptures which include representations of the usual religious subjects and even family pets. Of special note is the grave of the famous coachman James Selby which is well worth searching for.

I have purposely been rather vague in some of the descriptions as I would not like to spoil the experience. It really is thrilling to discover something wonderful about stumbling upon something outstanding of which you were totally unaware. Of all the places to visit in London I strongly suggest that you make the effort to visit Highgate Cemetery. Even though it is not one of the top London tourist attractions it does get rather busy but to understand fully why you will have to visit it yourself.

Beyond The Guide Book for San Diego

by Thomas Burtonelli

Having lived in San Diego for much of my life, I find it amazing that many visitors stick to just the Zoo and beaches. My friends, there is so much more to do. In fact, here are some attractions for families and single adults alike.

Viva la Mexico! San Diego sits on the border with Tijuana just to the south. TJ, as it is known, is a lot of fun. Unfortunately, there has been a lot of drug crime lately, so make sure to check with locals on that status before heading down.

When it comes to partying, San Diego has a vast collection of locations that cater to everyone. One of the best is Lahaina’s in Pacific Beach. Picture an outdoors deck facing the boardwalk and beach with plenty of beer and you have the right idea.

Just trolley it baby! San Diego has installed a trolley system that runs through parts of the county. Throw away your schedule of things to see. Just jump on the trolley, get off when you like and do some exploring. We’re friendly people.

Love a good slab of meat? Prime rib specifically? Try Bully’s in Del Mar. This dingy bar/restaurant has been a famous gathering place for years for locals looking for prime rib that is simply mouth watering.

If an adult beverage in a more regal spot is your idea of a good time, the Hyatt in downtown San Diego is the place to go. Well, the top floor at least. It is a classy bar with large windows overlooking all of San Diego.

San Diego and beaches are two terms that go together. There are lots of little beaches. If you want a beach with a bit of a hippie vibe, Ocean Beach is the place. From head shops to beer bars, OB has a little something for everyone.

Looking for something really different? How about bull fighting? They don’t allow it in San Diego, but you can hop across the border and catch it in Tijuana. The bull ring is located on the coast to the west of the city.

This represents only a tiny list of the many things you can do in San Diego. I’ve lived here for 30 plus years and still find new things to do. People are friendly. The place is beautiful and fun is available at just about every turn. See you soon, dude!

California White Water Rafting 101

by Will Stevens

White water rafting is one activity that will certainly bring your adventure level to a different height and provide a unique experience for you and those that you go with. Before setting off on a rafting trip, you should make sure that you plan your trip properly. This will not only mean packing the right things but going with a reputable company and some other things.

It’s easy to find rafting companies, all you have to do is run a search and hundreds of listings will come up. A good way to start is by checking on licenses and permits. Don’t forget to check for the qualifications of the employees you will be going with as well.

If you know where to then things will be just at your level; you don’t want to end up in rapids that are way too hard for you that it will only scare you. If this is something that you have tried before or you ate a seasoned rafter then it would also be boring to go on something too easy.

There are specific river classes for each skill level when it comes to white water rafting. For families and first timers it is advisable to go on a river that is either class 1 or 2. Rivers under this class have little rough areas and will not require a lot of maneuvering.

With the right paddling skills you can take rivers that have more waves and even have drops in them. These types of rivers belong to classes 3 and 4. These will require the basic paddling skills. Those who have a lot of experience may try out class 5 rivers which will need a lot of maneuvering skills.

Some of the best rivers to go rafting in can be found in California. They are the South Fork American River, Kaweah River and Tuolumne River. These Rivers belong to different classes and will provide you with a different experience with each ride.

The South fork belongs with the North Fork River but is it is the most boated. It will provide you with a thrilling ride and beautiful views. Both the Tuolumne and Kaweah Rivers belong to higher class rapids and have great views as well.

Don’t forget to bring along the right gear with you when you go on your rafting trip. Since you will be under the sun a lot, sun block and moisturizer are essentials. Don’t forget to pack clothes that are light weight and will dry easily since you will be getting wet even if you aren’t exactly in the water.
